Men's Tennis Sweeps Triple-Header

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team swept all matches in a triple-header on Monday at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners faced Oral Roberts in the first match and followed with two matches against Cameron. With the three wins, Oklahoma extended its winning streak to four games and is now 7-3 overall.

“It was a good day because we played a lot of matches, which gave some of our new guys practice,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “It was a long day, and I'm very proud of our players.”

Senior Tommy Garrison and sophomore Federico Chavarria picked up the first doubles win against Oral Roberts. Facing Tyrone Hill and Cuan Farquharson, the two Sooners downed their opponents, 8-1. Junior Marek Velicka and senior Alexei Ivanov won the doubles point for Oklahoma with an 8-1 victory over Alex Durgel and Clemons Geercken, and sophomore Ryan Thomas and senior Matt Long wrapped up doubles by defeating Eddie Paez and Patrick Guilliod, 8-2.

Velicka continued OU's streak with a, 6-1, 6-2, win at the No. 1 singles position against Hill. At the No. 2 position, Ivanov clinched the match for Oklahoma when he handed Dargel a, 6-1, 6-1, loss in straight sets. Also picking up wins in singles were Garrison at No. 3, freshman Cale Planck at No. 5 and freshman Sergey Avdeyev at No. 6, to bring the final score to 7-0.

OU extended its winning streak to four later in the day when it shut out Cameron in back-to-back matches, 7-0, 6-0. In the first match, the Sooners stuck with the same doubles lineup from the match against ORU. This time, the tandem of Long and Thomas won the doubles point for Oklahoma with an 8-5 decision against Carlos Fernandez and David Detudamo.

Oklahoma switched around the singles lineup in the first match against Cameron by putting Garrison at the No. 1 position, marking the first time Garrison has played at that spot this season. Joining Garrison in singles action were Ivanov, Gregg, Planck, Thomas and Long, who all won their matches to give OU a 7-0 victory.

The Sooners and the Aggies opted to play only singles in the final match of the evening. This time, Ivanov took the No. 1 spot, and Avdeyev returned to the lineup at the No. 5 position. Despite playing in two previous matches, the Sooners managed to take all matches in straight sets and blanked the Aggies, 6-0.

Oklahoma will look to extend its winning streak to five as the team travels to Arlington, Texas, on Friday, March 3, to face Louisiana-Lafayete at 12 p.m.
