Women's Golf Update From Puerto Rico

February 25, 2006 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team is in 11th place with a 312 (+24) after Friday's first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The Sooners are 17 strokes behind leader Purdue.

“We had a really good practice session after the round today and I think the team is ready to go for tomorrow,” said head coach Carol Ludvigson.  “It's a course where you can run into some putting problems and that's an area that we really worked on.”

Leading the way for the Sooners is sophomore Kelly Jacques, who is tied for 25th with a 76 (+4).  True freshman Kendall Dye and sophomore Heather Wright are tied in 38th place after shooting a 78 (+6).  After carding an 80 (+8), lone senior Amparo Gala is tied in 54th place and redshirt freshman Staci Smoot is tied for 86th place after carding an 88 (+16).

“We're five shots out of eighth so we're looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully moving into the top eight and then moving on to Sunday,” said Ludvigson.

Oklahoma will resume play tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. and will finish the tournament Sunday morning at the same time.  The tournament is being played at the 6,000-yard, par-72 Cocoa Beach Golf Course.
