February 22, 2006 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team will begin its spring season this Friday, Feb. 24, at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The tournament is hosted by Purdue University and will be played at the 6,000-yard, par-72 Cocoa Beach Golf Course.
The young Oklahoma lineup will include lone senior Amparo Gala, sophomore Kelly Jacques, sophomore Heather Wright, redshirt freshman Staci Smoot and true freshman Kendall Dye.
“First of all, they are really excited to get back to play because they have been practicing for four weeks now,” said head coach Carol Ludvigson of her golfers. “They are excited and very enthusiastic about this tournament. There will be a different lineup from this fall so it will be interesting to see the difference in team dynamics.”
The 16-team field includes Purdue (ranked No. 3), Arkansas (9), Texas A&M (18), Kent State (21), Florida (22), Oklahoma State (23), East Tennessee State, Indiana, Iowa State, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, TCU, Tulsa and Wisconsin.
The tournament will feature a 54 hole format. Beginning Friday, 18 holes will be played each day with the tournament wrapping up on Sunday.
The Sooners will also compete in the “Mo” Morial Invitational (Mar. 10-12) this spring, along with the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational (Mar. 17-19), Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic (Mar. 24-26) and the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (Apr. 9-10 in Norman).
Fall Season Recap
After a good start in the first two tournaments of the fall, the Sooners will be looking for that same enthusiasm as they begin the spring season. The Sooners finished seventh in both the Badger Invitational and Mary Fossum Invitational. The momentum slowed, though, and the team finished 20th at Price's “Give em Five” and 15th at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
Sophomore Kelly Jacques led the Sooners with top-10 finishes in the first two tournaments, including a third-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational where she shot a career-low round of 71. In the same tournament, true freshman Kendall Dye shot a career-low 72 and finished tied for 21st as the Sooners carded a season-low round of 295 (+7).
Junior Jaclyn Stelzer posted a top-15 finish at the Badger Invitational, where she shot a season-low 74 and tied for 14th. True freshman Kendall Dye led the way for OU in the last two tournaments with a tie for 33rd at Price's “Give em Five” and a tie for 31st at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
“We didn't do as well as we had hoped in the fall, so we are looking forward to a good spring semester,” said Ludvigson. “The girls are very enthusiastic, have a lot of drive and are ready to go.”
