No. 6 Sooners Fall to No. 1 Gym Dogs

NORMAN, Okla. The No. 6 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team fell short to No. 1 Georgia 197.475-195.950 in front of 9,051 fans at the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga., today.

The Sooners move to a 4-6 overall record and are 0-2 in Big 12 Conference action. Oklahoma is now 1-6 versus ranked opponents on the season and 2-1 in road contests. The Gym Dogs are a perfect 10-0 and recorded their highest final score of the season.

"I thought we did a lot of good things today," said head coach Steve Nunno. "We continue to get better each and every meet and we have improved from the first meet in Cancun when we competed against Georgia. We still have some things we need to work on and polish up."

In the all-around competition, Georgia's Courtney Kupets scored the SEC's highest mark of the year at 39.6 while fellow Gym Dog Tiffany Tolnay finished in second with another career-high 39.5. Junior Brittney Koncak-Schumann recorded a 39.400 and finished in third place while teammates Haley DeProspero earned fourth (39.100) and Kiara Redmond finished in fifth (38.325).

Oklahoma started the meet on bars and posted a 48.875 team score. Koncak-Schumann had the best finish for the Sooners in the event recording a 9.875 which was good enough for a tie for third place. Coral Borda recorded a 9.825 and a tie for fifth in her first appearance on the event this season. Following the first rotation the Gym Dogs took the lead 49.425-48.875.

"Brittney (Koncak-Schumann) was amazing all day," Nunno said. "She had a great meet and was close to winning the all-around just behind Courtney Kupets."

On the next rotation, OU looked to regain the lead on vault which has been their best event of the season. The Sooners posted a 49.075 team score but still trailed the Gym Dogs 98.775-97.950. Junior Tiffany Willin had the best finish for OU after posting a 9.85 and a tie for fourth place.

On floor exercise, Redmond posted a 9.875 and earned a tie for second. Koncak-Schumann finished in a tie for sixth with Georgia's Audrey Bowers after recording a 9.85.

The Sooners' beam struggles continued with only Koncak-Schumann and Borda posting higher then a 9.8. Koncak-Schumann recorded a 9.875 and finished in second place and Borda performed a 9.825 and earned a tie for fifth.

"I felt we were competitive on every event they just out performed us on their landings," Nunno said. "We did a lot of good things and I'm proud of the team's effort."

Oklahoma will be on the road for the next three meets as they head to Columbia, Mo., on Feb. 17 to finish Big 12 Conference competition. The following week, the Sooners will be in Louisiana to face LSU on Feb. 24 and Centenary on Feb. 26. Oklahoma will be back in the Howard McCasland Field House on March 3 to host Texas Woman's University.
