NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams announced Thursday the signing of Steven Legendre of Flower Mound, Texas, to a National Letter of Intent.
“Steven is already amongst the best in the country on the floor exercise and vault,” Williams said. “We're very excited to sign one of the nation's top gymnastics prospects.”
Legendre proved his status as one of the country's elite at the 2006 Visa U.S. Championships in August. Competing in the 16-18 year-old junior division, Legendre won the vault title and took second on the parallel bars.
In the senior division, competing against the nation's best, including current OU gymnasts Jonathan Horton, Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons, Chris Brooks, Jake Messina and Jason Laughton, Legendre finished in the top 20 in the all-around competition while taking third on the vault.
Legendre also finished third on vault at the 2006 Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nev., and was eighth in the all-around at the 2006 Junior Olympic Nationals, including a fourth-place finish on vault and third place on the floor exercise.

At Oklahoma, Legendre will join his sister, Jessica, a sophomore infielder on the Sooners' softball team.
Legendre trains under coach Yuri Kartsev at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano, Texas, and attends Spring Creek Academy, the same club and high school as current OU gymnast Wes Aderhold. He is the son of Raymond and Lisa Legendre.
“We're looking forward to Steven being a part of our great tradition here at Oklahoma,” Williams said.
The Sooners open the 2007 season at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Jan. 12.
