NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma baseball team will conclude its fall season with the annual Red-White Series this week.
Beginning on Tuesday, the team will split into Red and White squads and compete in a three-game set at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The series will continue on Wednesday and end on Thursday.
Action is slated to get underway at 3 p.m. on all three days of the series, which is free and open to the public. The Sooners have already competed in 12 intrasquad scrimmages this fall.
“The fall has been very competitive and we are looking forward to a strong finish to the season,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “Despite the fact that we lost 12 seniors from last year's team, the fall has shown the coaching staff that we have a solid amount of depth with this team. Needless to say, we are all excited to get the upcoming season started and build off last year's success.”
OU opened fall practice on Sept. 21 with 22 newcomers from a recruiting class that was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country by Collegiate Baseball. Joining the class are 15 letterwinners off a 2006 squad that finished the season at 45-22 overall (17-10 Big 12) and put together the program's most successful run in the postseason since its last appearance in the College World Series in 1995.
As a result of the program's first appearance in a Super Regional (format originated in 1999), OU was ranked as high as No. 9 (Baseball America) in the final top 25 polls and finished the season as the nation's leader in fielding percentage (.983).
The team will report back on Jan. 16 for individual workouts and begin team sessions on Jan. 22 in preparation for the 2007 season.
