Horton, U.S. Third in Prelims

NORMAN, Okla. -- Jonathan Horton and the U.S. National Team finished third in Subdivision I in the preliminary rounds of the 2006 World Gymnastics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark Saturday.

The American squad had a team total of 358.100 and stands behind Russia (365.400) and Korea (358.475).  There are nine subdivisions which will qualify teams for the team finals, which will begin on Oct. 17.

Horton, the 2006 NCAA all-around champion, ranked 13th in the all-around standings with a total score of 84.500.  The junior from Houston, Texas finished first on the floor exercise with a 15.425 total.

Team USA's Guillermo Alvarez stands fifth (88.650) and U.S. champion Alexander Artemev is seventh (88.625).

The U.S. squad is led by OU head coach Mark Williams, a four-time NCAA Coach of the Year and USA Gymnastics' 2006 Coach of the Year.
