Softball Wraps Up Weekend with Win

October 01, 2006 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma softball remains perfect on the fall season after wrapping up the Fall Festival Sunday afternoon with an 11-1 run rule (five innings) of Pittsburg State at the OU Softball Complex.  With its five wins over the weekend and a victory over Seminole State earlier in the fall, Oklahoma owns a 6-0 mark.

“This is the best I have felt in a long time after a fall tournament,” head coach Patty Gasso said.  “Our newcomers have really showed their potential for the spring while our pitching has also been much improved.”

It was none other than freshman Amber Flores who sparked the Sooner offense in the first inning against Seminole State.  The rookie designated player smashed her fourth home run of the fall season, a solo shot to left center field, to give the Sooners the 1-0 edge after the first frame.  Flores finished the game with two hits and is leading the squad with 11 RBI through six games this fall season.

The Sooners added two additional runs in the second and poured it on in the third adding four more runs.  With the bases loaded in the fourth, junior Savannah Long ripped an RBI single to center field to score Amber Spaulding.

After a bases-loaded walk scored Samantha Ricketts, sophomore Jessica Legendre stepped to the plate with the bases juiced again.  The shortstop pounded an two RBI single as Oklahoma took the 7-0 lead after three.

The Sooners didn't let up in the fourth as Amber Spaulding's RBI single scored Dickson.  Mariee Mena followed with an RBI ground out to second base to score Spaulding.

In the same inning, Lindsey Vandever's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner D.J. Mathis and Stacia Aleman's RBI single to right field added another run as OU held an 11-1 lead after four.

The Sooner pitching continued to dominate as starter Lauren Eckermann went for 3.2 innings and allowed four hits while striking out six batters.  The juco-transfer only allowed one earned run.

In relief, junior Jadyn Smith didn't allow a hit in 1.1 innings.

The Sooners continue fall action on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they host Carl Albert at 5 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex.
