Gymnasts to Provide Exhibition

January 09, 2006 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team will be on hand at Cleveland Elementary school Wednesday morning to provide an exhibition to the school's students. The exhibition will include a highlight video from the 2005 season and will showcase the gymnasts on the floor exercise, pommel horse and the mini-trampoline.

"This is a good opportunity for the students of Cleveland to experience some gymnastics and get them excited about the upcoming season," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "The guys on the team enjoy giving back to the community and showcasing their gymnastics skills."

Cleveland Elementary program coordinator Regina Bell along with Williams have instituted a program that works for both sides.

Despite classes of their own and training for the upcoming season, members team still find time in their busy schedule to make weekly visits to Cleveland Elementary to assist teachers and mentor students. Gymnasts are assigned to assist a specific teacher with day-to-day activities, which include reading, practicing grammar skills and math exercises.

In addition to Wednesday's exhibition, the Cleveland students will be in attendance when the Sooners take on Michigan on Jan. 27 in the Howard McCasland Field House.

The 2006 edition of the Sooners kick off the season this weekend, Jan. 13 and 14, at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU's first home meet is scheduled for Jan. 20 when the Sooners host the Air Force Academy at 7 p.m. in the Howard McCasland Field House.
