LOOKING BACK
In his second year at the helm of the Oklahoma volleyball program, head coach Santiago Restrepo and the Sooners finished with a 7-22 overall mark and a 2-18 record in Big 12 play. OU faced a tough schedule, playing 10 of its matches against top-25 teams, nine of which were against conference foes.
The Sooners started the season on a three-match winning streak, taking victories over TCU, Indiana and Loyola. The Sooners went on to claim conference wins over Baylor and Texas Tech and non-conference wins over UT-San Antonio and UT-Arlington.

SANTOS EARNS TOP BLOCKING HONORS
Junior middle blocker Eliane Santos was recognized by Collegiate Volleyball Update as one of the top five blockers in the country.
Collegiate Volleyball Update selected Nebraska's Melissa Elmer as its 2005 Blocker of the Year and chose four other student-athletes in the honorable mention category. Joining Santos on the honorable mention list were Arkansas's Amy Allison, UCLA's Nana Meriwether and Ivana Kuzmic of LSU.
Santos, a transfer from College of Southern Idaho, finished the season with a team-leading 1.57 blocks per game and also led the Sooners in kills per game (3.86).
It marked the first time any Sooner has received recognition from Collegiate Volleyball Update.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Oklahoma tied its highest number of honorees since the inception of the Big 12 with seven Sooners being named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. Leading the way on the first team were juniors Anna Monsen and Joanna Schmitt, along with sophomores Julie Chester, Anna Stadel and senior Gabriela Tonon.
Juniors Rachel Jackson and Laura Tomes grabbed second-team honors. It marked the second straight selection for Jackson, Monsen, Schmitt and Tomes.
SCHMITT BREAKS 1,000 MARK
In her first match back from injury in the 2005 season, junior Joanna Schmitt became a member of the 1,000 kills club. Schmitt is the only Sooner to accomplish this feat in the rally-scoring era. The junior has pounded 1,218 kills during her three-year career at OU.
YEAR-TO-YEAR COMPARISON
For the last two years, the Oklahoma volleyball program continues to improve in statistical categories. In 2004, OU improved in every major statistical category. The same can be said in 2005. Oklahoma has improved in kills per game, assists per game, aces per game and blocks per game compared to the 2004 stats. Below is a breakdown.
|
Former Sooner Sheena Werling held the rally-scoring record with six aces while Gloria Holcomb held the sideout record with eight. In addition, the Sooners totaled 17 aces which set a new team-rally scoring record.
Weiland also set new Big 12 records with her strong performance. She now holds the four-game rally scoring aces record mark in the conference. The previous record was eight and held by Katia Lara of Texas (2000). Currently, Weiland leads all Big 12 players with 15 aces on the season (1.25 per game).
SANTOS VS. NEWCOMERS
Junior transfer Eliane Santos, a former College of Southern Idaho product, was one of the finalists for Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Below is a comparison of her stats to Texas Tech's Phillister Sang, the 2005 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and other top newcomers around the league this past season.

The following is a look at what each newcomer contributed in the 2005 season:
Eliane Santos - 3.86 kills per game; KPG ranks fifth among all Big 12 players; leads team in blocks with 1.57 per game; fourth among Big 12 players in BPG.
