Sooners Tee Off Season With Badger Invitational
September 08, 2005 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team will tee off in its first tournament of the season Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Badger Women's Golf Invitational in Madison, Wis. The tournament is hosted by the University of Wisconsin and will be played on the 6,241-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course.
The Oklahoma team will sport a young lineup for its first competition, including sophomore Kelly Jacques, junior Jaclyn Stelzer, redshirt freshman Staci Smoot, freshman Kendall Dye and junior Megan Goodwin. Sophomore Heather Wright will compete as an individual. Senior Amparo Gala will be out of the lineup for the first two tournaments due to medical reasons.
“It's a young lineup but they are all very enthusiastic and hard-working,” said Carol Ludvigson, who is beginning her 21st season as OU's head coach. “They are ready to get the season started and are excited about teeing off.”
The two-day invitational will consist of 36 holes on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. The last 18 holes will be played Monday starting at 8 a.m. Pairings for the final 18 holes will be determined by Sunday's scores. Each squad's lowest four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.
Competing in the Badger Invitational will be Missouri (ranked No. 16), TCU (30), Purdue (31), Texas A&M (36), Arkansas-Little Rock, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, New Mexico State and Wisconsin.
“We have set goals to place in the top three as a team and to have three individulas finish in the top 10,” said Ludvigson. “But because it is the first tournament and we don't really know a lot about the other teams due to their different lineups, we will also use this weekend as a barometer for what we will need to work on as a team and for future tournaments.”
OU's fall season will also include the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18 in East Lansing, Mich.), NMSU Invitational (Oct. 16-18 in Las Cruces, N.M.) and the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown (Oct.31-Nov. 2 in Henderson, Nev.).
