NORMAN, Okla. For the third time in four years, the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team will be receiving rings for its title-winning performance. The 2005 version of the Sooners collected 13 All-America honors en route to the program's sixth national title.
A ceremony honoring the 2005 team will take place at halftime of the OU-Kansas State football game. The ceremony will include a short video of highlights from the 2005 season and will culminate with members of last year's team receiving championship rings presented by OU Regent Chairwoman Christy Everest and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione.
Under head coach Mark Williams, the Sooners have won three national titles, five Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference championships, collected 56 All-America honors, a Nissen Emery award and five individual national titles. Additionally, Williams was named the 2005 NCAA Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.
The Sooners will have the opportunity to defend their title when they host the 2006 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships at the Lloyd Noble Center on April 6-8, 2006.
The defending champions will open the season on Jan. 13-14, 2006 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU will return to Norman one week later for the first home action of the year when it hosts the Air Force Academy on Jan. 20, 2006.
