MADISON, Wis. -- The Sooners (2-1) suffered their first defeat of the 2005 season with a 2-0 setback to No. 16 (Soccer Buzz) Wisconsin at McClimon Soccer Complex on Friday. The game was part of the first annual Big 12/Big Ten Challenge.
“This was a game, despite the score, that could have gone either way,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “Both defenses kept each other from creating very many chances and both goals were scored off turnovers in our defensive end.”
It was the first ever meeting for OU against an opponent from the Big Ten Conference. The Badgers remain a perfect 3-0 this season after defeating two Big 12 schools so far this season (topped Kansas 3-2 in overtime).

The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on Amy Vermeulen's goal on a shot from with six yards that beat OU goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols. The assist was credited to Allison Preiss.
In the second half, it was once again Vermeulen putting Wisconsin on the scoreboard, this time on a penalty kick after an OU defender took down the Badger in the box.
“You take away the two goals off the turnovers and our defense was solid today, especially when you consider the surface up here,” added Evans. “Our team is use to a lower-cut grass which allows for a faster style of play. Today, our offense was limited in the attack (on a field with longer grass) because we could not put together quick passes or dribble through their defense.”
OU held Wisconsin to nine shots on the day, while the Sooners fired four (lowest of the season). Kady Kelly, Allyson Kucera, Shana All and Lauren Harris all contributed shots in the contest.
For the second consecutive game, the Sooners held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
Nichols finished the game with three saves while her counterpart, Lynn Murray, collected two saves in the game.
OU will look for a split on the weekend when it returns to action on Sunday to conclude the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge in Iowa City, Iowa to take on the University of Iowa. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. against the Hawkeyes (1-1) at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

“We play on a lot of surfaces up north, which are traditionally longer cut fields,” said Evans. “This is something we will have to get use to and we will have to try some different things on offense in order to be more successful.”
