OU Finishes Seventh at Mary Fossum Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. Led by a strong individual performance by sophomore Kelly Jacques, the Oklahoma women's golf team finished the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., Sunday in seventh place with a total score of 916 (+52). The Sooners carded a 307 (+19) in the third round and finished 27 strokes behind first-place Michigan State.
Jacques topped last week's career-best finish (seventh place at the Badger Invitational) with a tie for third place at the Fossum Invitational. Jacques shot a 221 (+5) and turned in a final round of 71 (-1), which is the second time she has posted the career low. She finished one stroke behind leaders Jennifer Hong (Northwestern) and Becky Wood (Kent State).
True freshman Kendall Dye tied for 21st after recording an 80 (+8) in the third round to bring her final score to 228 (+12). Redshirt-freshman Staci Smoot shot a 79 (+7) in the final round and tied for 32nd place. Smoot finished with a score of 233 (+17). After a final-round 77 (+5), junior Jaclyn Stelzer finished tied for 48th with a 237 (+21). Sophomore Heather Wright finished the tournament in 56th place with a 239 (+23) and junior Megan Goodwin posted a 240 (+24) to tie for 59th.
“We had a good second round and we need to go into every round with that same intensity,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “We need to be confident in our abilities and, now, I think we are even more determined to do better.”
One other Big 12 team competed in the 15-team field that played the par-72, 6,099 yard Forest Akers West Golf Course. Iowa State finished tied for 10th place.
The Sooners will continue the fall season at the NMSU Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 16-18.
