Sooners Finish Seventh at Badger Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's golf team finished its season-opening tournament Monday with seventh-place honors at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis. The Sooners carded a 308 (+20) in the third round and finished the tournament with a total score of 925 (+61). Oklahoma finished 46 strokes behind first-place Purdue.
Sophomore Kelly Jacques and junior Jaclyn Stelzer both improved their game throughout the tournament and posted career-best finishes. Jacques was tied for 13th after the first two rounds on Sunday and shot a 73 (+1) in the last round to climb into seventh place. Jacques carded a final score of 224 (+8) to earn her first career top-10 finish. Stelzer climbed from 18th place after the first two rounds into a 14th-place tie by shooting a 75 (+3) in the last round. Stelzer posted a total 227 (+11) for her first ever top-20 collegiate finish.
True freshman Kendall Dye tied for 44th after a third-round score of 80 (+8) putting her total score at 237 (+21). Redshirt freshman Staci Smoot also had a third-round score of 80 (+8) to give her a total score of 238 (+22). Smoot tied for 47th place. Tying for 49th place, sophomore Heather Wright shot a 77 (+5) in the final round. Wright, who competed individually, ended with a three-round 239 (+23). Junior Megan Goodwin finished 59th with a total score of 244 (+28). Goodwin turned in an 80 (+8) in the third round.
“We are excited about our individual finishes but we are disappointed with our overall finish,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “I think that disappointment will fuel our fire for next weekend. We are very determined now.”
Oklahoma was one of five Big 12 teams making up the 12-team field that competed at the 6,241-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course. Texas A&M finished second with a 896 (+32), Missouri finished third after posting a 898 (+34) and Kansas State and Iowa State tied for ninth with total scores of 935 (+71).
The Sooners will play in their second tournament of the fall season next weekend at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. The tournament will begin Saturday, Sept. 17.
