NORMAN, Okla. In its first tournament of the season, the Oklahoma women's golf team is in sixth place at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis., after shooting a 617 (+41) in the first two rounds of play Sunday. The Sooners trail first-place Purdue by 35 strokes.
Two Sooners are in the top 20 with one round remaining. Sophomore Kelly Jacques paced OU with a 151 (+7) and is tied for 13th place, 11 strokes behind leader Onnarin Sattayabanphot (Purdue). Jacques turned in rounds of 77 (+5) and 74 (+3). Junior Jaclyn Stelzer is tied for 18th place after shooting a 152 (+8).
True freshman Kendall Dye and redshirt-freshman Staci Smoot each carded a 157 (+13) and are tied for 39th. Sophomore Heather Wright, who is competing individually, is tied for 56th with a 162 (+18) while junior Megan Goodwin is tied for 64th with 164 (+20).
“As a team we learned a lot today and I saw a lot of positive things from our girls,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “We had a great first round and I am really excited that we have two girls in the top 20. We're also only four strokes behind fifth place, so I think our goal of placing in the top five is attainable.”
Oklahoma is one of five Big 12 teams helping comprise the 12-team field that is playing at the 6,241-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course. Texas A&M stands in second place (590), Missouri is tied for third (599), Iowa State is in seventh (619) and Kansas State is tied for eighth (620).
The Badger Invitational's third and final round will begin Monday at 8 a.m. CDT.
