DeProspero to Compete at Visa Championships

NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma incoming freshman gymnast Haley DeProspero (day práwss pər ō ) will challenge 23 other of the nation's best senior women gymnasts Thursday, Aug. 11, at the 2005 Visa Championships.

The Visa Championships, at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., are USA Gymnastics' national championships of artistic and rhythmic men's and women's gymnastics.

DeProspero begins competition in the senior division of artistic gymnastics with Thursday's preliminary round at 7 p.m.

The women's all-around and event finals begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. The combined preliminary- and final-round scores determine the individual event and all-around champions.

DeProspero qualified for The Championships with her 10th-place result at the U.S. Classic, July 23, at Virginia Beach, Va. It was her best result in three appearances at the meet. The Plano, Texas, native placed 27th in 2002 and 24th in 2003. She sat out of competition through most of 2004 while recovering from a knee injury.

Past all-around champions of the Visa Championships include Dominique Dawes (1994), Shannon Miller (1993 and 1996), Dominique Moceanu (1995), Carly Patterson (2004), Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Kim Zmeskal (1990-1992).
