Sooners Wrap Up Weekend with Practice

August 07, 2005 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. The OU football team wrapped up the weekend with a two-and-a-half hour practice Sunday evening beginning at the rugby fields on the OU campus.

The practice, which was moved to the indoor facility at its midpoint due to an approaching storm, featured more 11-on-11 team drills than previous days in preparation for the first scrimmage of the preseason Monday at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Coach Bob Stoops added that while the team is set to begin its workout at 5:30 p.m., the actual scrimmage will likely not begin until 6:30 p.m.

“We'll do about 15 minutes of individual work,” Stoops said, “and then move on to some pass skeleton and kicking situations aside from the scrimmage. Then we'll scrimmage an hour to and hour and 15 minutes.”

Both the east and west sides of the stadium will be open for spectators. Fans may enter through the south gates on either side of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Restrooms and concessions will also be open on both sides. Fans are not allowed to enter with cameras.

Sunday, the players were donned in shoulder pads for the second consecutive practice and the receivers shined, drawing a watchful eye from Stoops.

“I thought we looked really good,” Stoops said. “I thought the quarterbacks and receivers made a lot of nice throws and catches. You know, that's a good sign.  I like the way everyone is working. I continue to be incredibly impressed by the talent of the secondary with the young guys coming in. All are really good.”

In the secondary, sophomore cornerback Marcus Walker, who dislocated his left shoulder in Saturday's practice, was back on the field.  Walker was in pads but was held out of contact drills.

“His status is day-to-day,” Stoops said. “He'll probably be back fairly soon.”

Tuesday, the Sooners start their first of four scheduled two-a-day practices at 7:45 a.m. All practices will be open to the public and held at the rugby fields west of Lloyd Noble Center unless otherwise noted. Fans attending practices should park in the west LNC parking lots.
