Corbitt, Harris Lead OU Past Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Freshman Katie Corbitt scored her first collegiate goal in the season opener, helping lift the Sooners 2-1, over Saint Louis in the first overtime session on Friday at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The game winner was scored with just 25 seconds remaining in OT.
“Saint Louis is a very tough team,” said OU head coach Randy Evans. “I am really proud of our team for coming back like they did so late in the game. They never gave up and I was thrilled with the team's overall effort.”
After falling behind 1-0 on a goal by SLU's Mary Greene in the 86th minute, OU quickly countered a 1:35 later when sophomore Lauren Harris found the back of the Billikens' net. With the score tied with 2:25 remaining in the game, the two went into overtime.

The schools also went into overtime last year in the season opener in Norman, the only other meeting between the two, and battled to a 1-1 tie.
OU took three shots in extra time and improved to 5-4-1 in season openers. The last time the Sooners suffered a defeat in the first game of the season was in 2000.
On Friday, OU held a 17-16 advantage in the shot column and trailed SLU 5-4 in corner kicks. Leading the offense was junior Andrea Hurley who contributed assists on both goals in the game. Prior to Friday's contest, Hurley had one helper in her first two seasons in Norman.
Sophomore Allyson Kucera led all Sooners with five shots, followed by junior Kady Kelly and senior Lauren MacIver with four and three, respectively.
After a scoreless first half that saw OU take seven shots to SLU's four, the Billikens scored the game's first goal on a deflection that sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols gave up to Greene. Despite the late goal, the young keeper played a solid game with 10 saves and the OU defense did a stellar job of limiting the Billikens' scoring chances, especially from close range.
Harris put OU on the board on a one touch shot, from two yards out, that was set up perfectly by Hurley. Like Corbitt, the tally was also the first goal in Harris' collegiate career.
“I thought our defense was great, especially when you consider the fact that most of their chances were on long shots,” added Evans. “Our back line had a great performance but we still have to work on our one-on-one defense. That is something I am confident we can improve on.
“We also did not get to move the ball around as well as we can. But tonight, our offense really created a lot of chances to score and could have put more goals on the board. We are looking forward to taking this momentum home and playing on our field.”
The Sooners, 1-0, will return to Norman to prepare to host Arkansas on Sunday at 1 p.m. at John Crain Field. The Lady'Backs played in Tulsa on Friday and defeated the Golden Hurricane 5-1.
