Three Sooners Earn National Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla.   The College Gymnastics Association released its 2005 All-Academic Team Monday and the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team placed three athletes on the list.  Seniors Michael Gehart and Josh Gore join sophomore Brian Carr and 47 other individual gymnasts from around the nation who attained at least a 3.50 grade point average in addition to earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2004-2005 academic year.

Gehart was one of six gymnasts across the country to record a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.  For Gore, it was his third straight year to be named to the team.  The recent honor rounded off a stellar season for Gore who earned national honors on the pommel horse and parallel bars to help the program win its sixth national title.

Minnesota's Guillermo Alvarez earned a 4.0 grade point average and was designated CGA Scholar Athlete for the fourth straight year in addition to being selected as the recipient of the Nissen-Emery Award as the nation's outstanding senior gymnast. Joining Alvarez as four-year honoree were Ben Newman from Illinois-Champaign, Robert Sander of Springfield College, and Penn State's Jerker Taudien.

Stanford University claimed a third straight national academic team title with a team grade point average of 3.407. The University of Vermont vaulted to the second place position with Springfield College coming in third. M.I.T and Illinois-Champaign completed the top five while William and Mary, Navy, California-Berkeley, Oklahoma, and Penn State rounded out the top 10. The final team rankings are:
