May 03, 2005 | Women's Basketball

Kansas City Southern and Women's Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC) have announced that one of only four WNBA exhibition games played outside a WNBA or NBA city will be take place in Kansas City on May 7. Women's basketball fans will watch a match-up of the Minnesota Lynx and 2003 WNBA champion Detroit Shock at Municipal Auditorium, 7p.m. for the first “Kansas City Southern Shootout”.

Kansas City will welcome back three former Big 12 standouts: Kansas State's Nicole Ohlde and Missouri's Amanda Lassitar of the Minnesota Lynx, and Oklahoma's Dionnah Jackson who was drafted in the first round this year by Detroit.  2004 Olympic basketball gold medalists, Swin Cash and Ruth Riley, both of Detroit, and Kate Smith of Minnesota, will play. Other Olympians include Kristie Harrower of Minnesota and Merlakia Jones of Detroit, members of the 2004 Australian Olympic team and silver medalists.

The WNBA weekend is a great opportunity for young players and coaches to not only see a great game but participate in the Kid Fest and coaches' forum. The WNBA Kid Fest will be from 5:15-6:15 and will feature a Chalk Talk with WNBA players, Commemorative T-shirt, General Admission Ticket to the game, concession stand discount coupon, exclusive Autograph Session following the game, and door prizes!

Coaches can participate in the “Beyond the X's and O's” forum dealing with off-the-court issues. Sessions will be led by Deb Patterson, head coach of the Kansas State Wildcats, Dr. Chris Carr, nationally recognized sports psychologist,  and Leslie Bonci, nutritionist for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The forum is sponsored by National Center for Drug Free Sport and will be held at the downtown Marriott, with sessions running from 2 to 4p.m. Registration for the “Beyond the X's and O's” includes a networking reception and a ticket to the game.

It will be a great weekend you will not want to miss! Tickets are on sale, so register by contacting WIN for KC at 816-474-4652 or contact Jessica Blubaugh at blubaugh@sportkc.org for more information or visit www.sportkc.org.
