NORMAN, Okla. -- Although the 2005 NCAA Tournament ended on Monday with North Carolina claiming the national title over Illinois, sports writers are already looking ahead to the 2005-06 season.
Oklahoma, which returns the top five scorers from this season's 25-8 team, gets the No. 1 vote from CBS SportsLine senior writer Gregg Doyel.
Doyel writes, "Yes, Oklahoma. Absolutely, Oklahoma. The last time the Sooners had this much talent and depth, they reached the 2002 Final Four. Oklahoma could have the country's best starting frontcourt next season in Gray, Carter and Kevin Bookout.
"The backcourt will be wicked deep with Everett, Neal, Lawrence McKenzie, Drew Lavender and David Godbold. That's eight quality players, and seven are juniors or seniors."
CBS ranks the top five squads for 2005-06 with No. 1 Oklahoma followed by Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and Louisville. Other Big 12 teams in the top 25 include No. 11 Texas, No. 14 Texas Tech, No. 18 Kansas and No. 23 Oklahoma State.
