Sooner Softball Has No Answer For Kansas

April 24, 2005 | Softball

LAWRENCE, Kan.    A three run, first inning home run by Jessica Moppin propelled Kansas (22-19, 5-7) to a 4-1 Sunday win and series sweep of the No. 5 Oklahoma softball team (42-12, 10-5).

Just one weekend after owning a half game lead for first place in the Big 12 Conference and having control of their own destiny, the Sooners have fallen into a tie for fourth place (with Baylor) and have lost four of their last six Big 12 games.  The Sooners are also in the midst of a four game losing streak.

The Sooners had three hits, all doubles, but were unable to come up with a clutch hit.

Box Score

OU's lone run came in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Heather Scaglione.  Christina Enea preceded Scaglione with a leadoff base on balls and came all the way around to score on Scaglione's gapper.  Scaglione was stranded in scoring position despite reaching base with no outs.

KU returned its advantage to three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  A two-out slap single by Jackie Vazquez put the score at 4-1.

Moppin's three-run homer was her fifth hit of the series and her sixth RBI in the series.

Moppin's blast chased OU starter Kami Keiter (24-5) after one inning of work.  She allowed three earned runs and was credited with the loss in her shortest start of the season.  She was releived by Nicole Denes and Stacy Braddock, who combined to allowed one earned run on four hits.

KU starter Christina Ross impressed for the second straight day as she limited OU to one run on four hits.  The freshman hurler improved to 10-6 on the season.

OU has a 103 doubles on the season and is 11 short of the team, single season record of 114.

The Sooners will have to regroup quickly as a Bedlam rematch with Oklahoma State awaits on Wednesday. The Sooners and Cowgirls will begin the rematch in Stillwater at 7 p.m.
