Bedlam Softball Hits Norman Tonight

Enea Keys Another Bedlam Sweep

April 28, 2005 | Softball

STILLWATER, Okla.   For the fourth time in her Oklahoma career senior Christina Enea came up with the game winning hit to seal a defeat of Oklahoma State (32-18, 7-9) and clinch a Bedlam sweep for the Sooners. This time it was an RBI fielder's choice that gave the Sooners (43-12, 11-5) the 3-2 win in nine innings on Wednesday night in Stillwater.

“We worked very hard for this one tonight,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso.  “It was a very tenacious effort and when we hit some bumps we just kept popping up and battling.  It took a little longer than I wanted, but that should not take anything away from this tremendous effort.”

Freshman Tayl'r Hollis worked a leadoff walk in the second extra frame and was in scoring position, along with Kristin Vesely, when Enea came to the plate.  Enea hit a bouncer to short that allowed Hollis to beat the tag on a close play at the plate.

Box Score

The Sooners have won six straight in the series and 20 of the last 21.  It marks the second consecutive year that OU has swept the series and the eighth time in Big 12 history.

It was no surprise when OU senior Christina Enea opened up the scoring with a two-run single in the third inning.  By the end of the night Enea would increase her career RBI total against OSU to 11. She was 2-for-5 on the night to increase her career batting average against OSU to .400 (10-for-25).

Oklahoma State cut OU's margin in half with a run in the fourth inning.  Credit the run to OU starter Stacy Braddock, who sailed a rise ball to the back stop with two OSU runners in scoring position. The wild pitch allowed Shanel Scott to score, although she needed a head first slide to slip under Braddock's tag.

OSU threatened on Braddock in the fifth and sixth innings as well.  A failed OSU squeeze attempt may have been the key to the game.  After the whiff by Lacey Darity, OU catcher Heather Scaglione ran down Dominque Van Nortwick between third and home.  After tagging out Nortwick, Scaglione picked off Shianne Cruce at second base.  The unusual double play made Van Nortwick's leadoff double irrelevant.

The Sooners were one out away from the win in the seventh inning, although OSU did have the bases loaded for Shanel Scott.  Scott was able to slap a single up the middle off OU reliever Kami Keiter and the contest was sent into extra frames.

Braddock's impressive start was awash when the game went into extras.  The freshman from Garland, Texas, worked 5.1 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits.  It was Braddock's best start, in terms of runs allowed, since the start of Big 12 play.

Keiter earned the win and improved to 25-5 on the season.  She worked 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run.

The Sooners play their final Big 12 games this weekend when No. 25 Nebraska comes to town. The Huskers will be joined in town by the ESPN family of networks, who are hosting all of the softball and baseball games this weekend. The series opens on ESPN2 on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the finale will be played on ESPNU on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Huskers defeated Iowa State 11-5 in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon and enter the contest with a 31-17 overall mark and 7-7 conference record.
