April 20, 2005 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. Three members of the Oklahoma women's golf team were named to the first-team Academic All-Big 12 Women's Golf Team by the Big 12 Conference for their success on the golf course and in the classroom. Senior Emily Milberger, junior Amparo Gala and sophomore Jaclyn Stelzer are among the 31 first-team members.
Gala, a microbiology major who was chosen for the honor last year, was one of only three women on the list who earned a 4.0 GPA the past two semesters. Stelzer, a health & sports sciences major, also earned first-team honors in 2004. Milberger, who is majoring in marketing, has garnered the award three consecutive years.
“People often forget that these athletes are also students, but this honor shows how well-rounded and dedicated these girls are,” said head coach Carol Ludvigson. “Education is their top priority, and I'm very proud of them for that.”
To qualify, student-athletes must have participated in 60 percent of their teams' scheduled contests. First-team members must maintain a 3.20 GPA or higher either cumulative or during the two previous semesters, and second-team members must earn a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
Milberger, Gala, Stelzer and the rest of the Sooners will participate in the 2005 Big 12 Conference Women's Golf Championship scheduled for April 22-24 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
