Oklahoma Holds First Spring Scrimmage

Oklahoma Holds First Spring Scrimmage

April 02, 2005 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma's offense punched in four touchdowns and the Sooner defense claimed seven sacks and an interception in Saturday's 83-play scrimmage at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. It marked the first major scrimmage of the spring for OU.

“Overall I thought it was good,” said Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. “There was some poor execution in some areas, but you can expect that in the spring.  It's all part of the learning process.”

The first touchdown came on the fifth offensive series when Rhett Bomar completed a 15-yard pass to Quentin Chaney.  The freshmen receiver made a nifty move at the five, then scampered to the end zone to cap an 11-play, 70-yard march.

The second score came on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Jacob Gutierrez.  The freshman back set up the TD one play earlier with a 15-yard dash.  The drive lasted for 13 plays and also covered 70 yards.

The third touchdown was a 29-yard pass from Tommy Grady to Willie Roberts at the end of a six-play, 70-yard march.

Rhett Bomar, Grady and Paul Thompson continue to compete for the quarterback job.  Grady hit on 9-of-14 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown with one interception, Bomar was 10-of-16 for 84 yards and one touchdown and Thompson bit on 7-of-17 for 40 yards.

“I'm trying to watch everyone and I was a little focused on the defense, but I thought all three of (the quarterbacks) looked good,” Stoops said.  “They're all competing hard for the job.”

Donta Hickson was the top rusher with 14 carries for 50 yards.  Gutierrez carried 10 times for 30 yards and Jones had eight tries for 15.

DT Dusty Dvoracek paced the defense with Six tackles, including four sacks.

“Dusty was very active,” Stooops said.  “He's working in a great way.”

MLB Zach Latimer was the top tackler with none.  He also broke up one pass.  Lewis Baker, who has moved from linebacker to strong safety, had the lone interception in the scrimmage.  He returned 10 yards.

Kicker Garrett Hartley made 8-of-12 field goals, including a 55-yarder.  His misses came from 32 and 52 yards (three times).  Punter Cody Freeby averaged 48 yards on five punts with a long of 54 yards.

Oklahoma returns to the practice field Monday at 3:30 p.m.  The next major scrimmage is set for next Saturday at 10 a.m.
