Women's Golf in Ninth Place After Round One

NORMAN, Okla. Despite the thunderstorms that suspended second-round play, the Oklahoma women's golf team managed to finish the first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic with a 315 (+27), putting the team in ninth place. Baylor leads the 16-team field and is 19 strokes ahead of Oklahoma.

The tournament, hosted by Oklahoma, is being played at the 6,017-yard, par-72 course at The Trails Golf Club in Norman, Okla.

The highlight of the tournament came from Missouri junior Kelli Strubinger, who shot a hole-in-one on the sixth hole. Strubinger used an 8-iron to make her ace on the 166-yard, par-3 hole.

Leading the Sooners is senior Emily Milberger, who won the tournament title in 2003. Milberger fired a five-over-par 77, which puts her in a tie for 22nd.

Tied at 27th are freshman Kelly Jacques and sophomore Jaclyn Stelzer, who both shot a 78 (+6). Freshman Heather Wright, who carded a 10-over-par 82, is tied for 57th. Competing as an individual, sophomore Megan Goodwin finished one stroke behind Wright with an 83.

Finishing in a tie for 79th, junior Amparo Gala recorded an 86 (+14), while sophomore Charlie Bullard rounded out the scoring for Oklahoma with a 95 (+23).

Play will resume tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shotgun start to finish the second round. At 9:30 a.m., third-round play will begin with a shotgun start.
