Sooners Work Inside Stadium on Monday

NORMAN, Okla. -- After position drills on the fields at the Bud Wilkinson Practice Facility, the OU football team held a light scrimmage inside Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium under sunny skies on Monday afternoon in Norman.

The Sooners will hold their first public scrimmage on Saturday, April 2, at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

Head coach Bob Stoops reviewed the Monday practice with reporters as the team left Owen Field. "We knocked some of the rust off," said Stoops. "We got some more snaps for the young guys at full go. It was a little sloppy -- but it always is that first time out here. But, I liked the effort and the guys had a lot of enthusiasm. Guys are eager to learn and push themselves. So, it was good to get out here and go live a little bit."

On the offensive skill players...
"Yes, they did a nice job. The receivers seemed to catch the ball well downfield. The quarterbacks seemed to handle it all well. Yes, I thought there were some good signs there."

On thinking about making the quarterbacks live...
"We don't get any more, so until they let us go draft some a mid-year, I'm not gonna. We may tag them a little more than we have just to make sure they're aware that they might have taken a good shot right there. Just a hand in the chest or something. But, no, we're not going to make them live at all, that's for sure. Coach Long might leave me if I did that."

On the safeties...
"They're working it, getting a feel for things. You know, there's potential back there. They just have to keep getting comfortable with it. We've got to keep throwing passes and letting them run and get it all worked out. They're getting more familiar with it."

On Darrien Williams...
"We played Brandon (Shelby) in that dime slot but we're not sure whether Darrien will play there or not. Darrien is a guy that has a very legitimate chance to earn a starting job at one of those safety positions."

On the spring being important for the younger guys...
"Oh, absolutely. And not only them, but anybody -- the sophomores, any of them that haven't played an awful lot. They have a lot to prove here in the spring. And even guys who have played a lot have to keep it up and do more. But yes, anybody who hasn't had a significant amount of playing time has a lot to prove -- and that's at a lot of ages."

On the corners...
"I don't know if anyone stood out but they're making some progress. I didn't see anything either way that was too good or too bad. We'll watch the tape and see."
