OU Completes Second Spring Practice

OU Completes Second Spring Practice

March 23, 2005 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- A warm and sunny afternoon greeted the OU football team on the practice fields south of Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Wednesday. The Sooners worked outdoors for the first time this spring after holding yesterday's practice inside the Everest Practice Facility.

Head coach Bob Stoops met with the media following practice. "It's not really different from indoors, said Stoops. "The guys have a lot of enthusiasm and it was a little cleaner than yesterday. It went well."

On team blitz drill...
"Some of it was good, some bad. A lot of it's hard to tell without pads. It's mainly whether someone gets to the quarterback or not, whether someone's in position or not. The offense gets their share, the defense makes some. That's kind of how spring is."

On the quarterbacks...
"Three really good ones that are better than they were last year. They're coming along well and working well. I thought today they looked good."

On Calvin Thibodeaux...
"They're going to release him next week or the week after. I'm not going to throw him out there in the live drills after this long a time. We'll probably get him in some practice situations but we'll be cautious about it. There's no need to throw him right in there. You know, Calvin was really doing well last year until his injury. We'll count on him to be back and be improved from a year ago."

On Dusty Dvoracek...
"He's looking good. Moving around real well and active. Again, everything up front is hard to tell without any pads on. He's looked good out there the past two days."

On D.J. Wolfe...
"Yes, we're going to watch him. He's an athletic guy so we're going to give him an opportunity on defense. He's excited about it and he's made a lot of good plays in the short time being there. So, we'll see how it goes."

On changing practice because there are a lot of positions to fill...
"It doesn't really make a difference. We still get as many snaps as we can and we're still working for depth everywhere. We'll go at it about like we always do. There's a lot of excitement when there's not as much experience. Most of the seniors get a little tires of spring ball by their third, fourth -- or in Jason (White's) case, sixth year. Sure, these younger guys have a little more energy. But, we've always gone at it real well in the spring."

On the coaches' work between practices..
"We're always watching them and critiquing them -- trying to get them better."

On a different mindset for the offense trying to find a starting QB...
"We're always developing them, especially this time of year. Even though Jason had the experience, we were bringing the other guys along and giving them snaps. Coach Long is always working with them and is very detailed in his development and his technique work. We're still doing that -- that's what we do every spring."
