NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma wrestling team, ranked sixth, defeated Oregon State, 35-6 and Oregon, 30-22 at the Lloyd Noble Center, Friday. During the back-to-back duals, the Sooners won 14 out of twenty matches.
Oklahoma faced Oregon State in the first dual of the night, Teyon Ware (141) and Matt Storniolo (149) set the pace with two falls, while Sam Hazewinkel (125) and Joel Flaggert (197) dominated their opponents and won by major decisions.
Senior Joel Tapler made his first dual appearance of the season and defeated Jamie Rakevich by scoring a takedown with 10 seconds left in the third period to win by a 3-1 decision.
“It was a good dual against Oregon State. We had some strong performers and it was nice to see Joel Tapler go out a winner in his final collegiate match,” said Head Coach Jack Spates. “I thought we wrestled well, but we need a little more intensity and we'll have to work on that for the next match. But obviously this was a strong win.”
Storniolo earned his second pin of the night against Stephen Johnson of Oregon at the 1:49 mark, while Charles Jones acquired his sixth career fall against Oregon's Stewart Bogart at the 1:57 mark.
Hazewinkel remained undefeated (29-0), while freshman Trey Blakely (133) and Jerome Featherstone (157) increased their mat time.
“I thought we actually wrestled better this match. We also achieved our second objective, which was to keep some guys off the mat,” said Spates. “We wrestled backups in those matches that the normal starters did not go in."
Junior heavyweight Jake Hager's match was ended early by injury default in the first period.
"We're a little frustrated by Jake Hagar's injury,” added Spates. “We don't think it's a severe injury, but we wanted to get him off the mat because tomorrows an important match. I think we actually wrestled better the second match than the scored suggested.”
The Sooner will continue their season by hosting Big 12 Conference opponent Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. located at Norman High School.
