NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Big 12 Conference rival Missouri, 18-14, at Norman High School on Saturday. The Sooners improved to 15-4 on the season and 1-2 against Big 12 opponents with the win against the Tigers.
With a double forfeit at 125 pounds, undefeated Sam Hazewinkel (30-0) moved to 133 pounds and started the Sooners out strong by defeating Tyler McCormick by decision, 5-2. At 141 pounds, Teyon Ware (27-1) continued the pace and beat Josh Wagner by decision, 8-5.
Entering 149 pounds OU was up 6-0. Matt Storniolo continued his weekend pinning streak with a fall against No. 15 Cody Greene at the 2:12 mark. Storniolo pinned his last three opponents and currently leads the OU pin list with 13.
“Matt Storniolo was amazing this weekend, said head coach Jack Spates. "Three matches, three pins -- you can't ask for anything better than that."
Missouri made a strong comeback with wins at 157, 165, 174 and 184 pounds and took the lead, 14-12. At 197 pounds, Joel Flaggert (15-4) fought on top to defeat No. 17 Jeff Foust by decision, 6-2, taking back the lead, 15-14, for Oklahoma.
“Another big win was Joel Flaggert, who two months ago was not wrestling on top at all,” said Spates. “He devoted himself to it and found out he was really good at it, and dominated on top.”
The dual came down to the heavyweight match with senior Joel Tapler (6-2) filling in for No. 12 Jake Hager. Tapler, who competed in and won his first dual of the season, last night, was down 2-0 at the end of the second period. With 1:40 left in the third Tapler escaped, 2-1, and ended the match with a takedown with 35 seconds left and riding time to win be decision, 4-2.
“Joel Tapler had two matches and two wins,” added Spates. “It is really neat to have a guy like Joel, who sacrifices so much to help the program and to help guys like Jake Hager get to where they need to be. Jake is No. 12 in the country and in part because of guys like Joel Tapler who are working for the team”.
The Sooners will return to the mat on Saturday, Feb 12, to host Nebraska at 7 p.m. again at Norman High School.
