Women's Tennis Falls To BYU, 5-2

NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 24 Oklahoma women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season to No. 23 BYU, 5-2, Saturday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Complex in Provo, Utah. The Sooners fell to 5-1 while the Cougars improved to 5-1.

The Sooners posted victories at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles positions for OU's only points of the day. Playing at the No. 1 spot, sophomore Irina Lykina defeated BYU's Lauren Jones in a tough three-set match. Lykina dominated the first set 6-3 before falling 4-6 in the second set and winning the match with a 7-6 tiebreaker. The win marked Lykina's fourth straight No. 1 singles victory. Also victorious was freshman Christi Baxley who handily defeated BYU's Breanna Williamson winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

In other singles action, BYU's Olga Boulytcheva defeated senior Bethany Griffin, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 2 position while OU senior Heather Saluri fell to BYU's Anastasia Sourkova , 6-1, 6-0. In a hard fought match, freshman Christy Baxley fell to Jennifer Miccoli, 7-5, 6-4. At the No. 5 position, BYU's Dolly Chang beat senior Jessica Braver 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, the duo of Saluri and Lykina provided the highlight of day upsetting BYU's 44th-ranked pair of Dolly Chang and Jones, 9-7. It marked the first time this season the Sooner duo had played together.

The Sooners will try to bounce back when they head back to Oklahoma to face Tulsa Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
