December 03, 2005 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, ranked No. 1 in the preseason coaches' poll, began the 2006 season Saturday afternoon with the annual Red-White intrasquad scrimmage.  The meet, held at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center, saw team captain Jonathan Horton's White team defeat captain Jamie Henderson's Red team .

“I was very impressed with our overall performance,” said OU head coach Mark Williams.  “The newcomers looked great today.  I was very impressed with Wesley Aderhold and Chris Brooks.  They had a tremendous first competition in front of judges.  The newcomers have grown in leaps and bounds since arriving in Norman.  They have improved physically and are starting to fit into our system that builds championship teams.

“Overall, I'm happy with the position that our team is in at this point.  I think we are on track to be a great team in 2006.”

The Sooners open the season Jan. 13-14, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the Rocky Mountain Open.  OU will return to Norman for its first home meet on Jan. 20, when it hosts the United States Air Force Academy at the McCasland Field House.
