NORMAN, Okla. The defending men's gymnastics national championship team returns to the floor Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Oklahoma squad hosts the 2005 red-white intrasquad competition. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center located on Imhoff St. just north of Lloyd Noble Center.
“The Red-White competition is a good early test for our team. It gives them the opportunity to compete in front of judges and see how their scores stack up,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “It should be a fun competition with two teams competing for pride. We would love to have any interested fans come out, watch us compete and help us kick off our upcoming season.”
The two teams will be led by the 2006 captains, Jamie Henderson and Jonathan Horton, with Henderson leading the red team and Horton the white. The red team, which will begin the competition on the pommel horse, consists of Henderson, Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons, James Myers, Reed Pitts, Brandon Rhame, Brian Carr, Chris Brooks and Jason Laughton. The white team will begin the event on the floor exercise and includes Horton, Wes Aderhold, Kyle McNamara, Garrett Carr, Jacob Messina, Russell Czeschin and Joseph Weaver.
The Sooners open the season Jan. 13-14, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the Rocky Mountain Open. OU will return to Norman for its first home meet on Jan. 20, when it hosts the United States Air Force Academy at the McCasland Field House.
