Sooners Wrap Up Fall Season at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

November 03, 2005 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team wrapped up its fall season Wednesday at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown in Henderson, Nev., in 15th place.  The Sooners posted a final score of 930 (+66) after shooting a 313 (+25) in the third round.  UCLA took first-place honors.

Consistency was the theme for true freshman Kendall Dye, who shot three rounds of 74 (+2) for a total score of 222 (+6).  Dye finished tied for 31st place.  After a third-round 79 (+2), junior Megan Goodwin finished in a tie for 66th with a 235 (+19).  Sophomore Heather Wright tied for 68th with a 238 (+22) after carding a 79 (+7) in the third round.  With a total score of 242 (+26), redshirt freshman Staci Smoot tied for 72nd place after posting an 81 (+9) in the final round of play.  Junior Jaclyn Stelzer shot a round-three 82 (+9) for a total score of 245 (+29) and a tie for 76th place.

“It was a tough trip but we are so happy about Kendall,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “She is consistent, tough and very determined. The rest of the team struggled as we have for all of the fall. But I am very encouraged with how they are using the frustration to turn it into hard work and determination.”

Competition was steep with seven top-25 teams and one other Big 12 squad making up the 16-team field. The tournament was hosted by UNLV and was played at the 6,194-yard, par-72 Anthem Country Club.

The Sooners will tee off the spring season Feb. 24 with the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“We have a very good group that is dedicated and committed,” said Ludvigson. “We have a lot to do over the off-season and look forward to all of the hard work paying off in the spring. Everyone has their goals of what to work on in the off-season and they are fired up to do so.”
