Paris Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. -- Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) was chosen Big 12 Rookie of the Week and Sophia Young (Baylor) was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week by a media voting panel in the league's first selections of the 2005-06 season.

Young received her eighth career Big 12 honor, fifth as player of the week. Paris earned her first weekly accolade. Eight Sooners have claimed 12 Big 12 Rookie of the Week awards with the most recent being Leah Rush on Jan. 12 2004.

BIG 12 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Freshman Courtney Paris led OU to a 3-1 start and the championship game of the Preseason WNIT by averaging 22 points and 13.5 rebounds. She was named to the WNIT All-Tournament Team as she set tourney records with 20 rebounds against SMU and 54 total rebounds. She also set an OU debut record with 24 points and 10 rebounds against UW Milwaukee. Paris finished the tourney with 26 points and 19 rebounds at New Mexico and 19 points and six boards against No. 7 UConn.

BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophia Young, Baylor, F, 6-1, Sr, St. Vincent, The Grenadines

Sophia Young averaged 25.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Baylor's three wins over Georgia, UCLA and Indiana. She is shooting .600 (33-55) from the floor and has also registered four blocks and three steals. Young has recorded two double-doubles and missed a third by one rebound. She now has 46 career double-doubles, just eight shy of Angie Welle's Big 12 record of 54. Young hauled down her 1,000th career rebound against Georgia and currently has 1,026 to move into the No. 2 spot on the Baylor career charts and No. 5 on the Big 12 career list.

The Sooners return to the hardwood and the road when they travel to the Odwalla Classic this week.  OU and Iowa will tip off at 7 p.m. CST from War Memorial Gym in downtown San Francisco.  The Sooners will then play either Rider or host San Francisco on Saturday evening.

Both games will be broadcast like on KOKC (1520 AM) with Bill Pink on play-by-play and Chris Freet on color analysis.
