Wednesday's match up will be the second meeting between the two squads this season. The Sooners will be looking to avenge their earlier four-game (24-30, 29-31, 30-28, 28-30) loss to the Cyclones in Norman. In that match up, ISU outhit OU by a slim margin of .277 to .230. The Sooners took the advantage on the back row, claiming more digs than ISU. However, Oklahoma's 34 attack errors and nine service errors were costly in the match.
Despite its current losing skid, the Cyclones have been the surprise team in the Big 12 this season under the leadership of first-year head coach Christy Johnson. They Cyclones, picked in the preseason to finish last the in the Big 12, are currently sitting in seventh place in the conference standings.
The biggest reason for the improved Cyclone squad is the team's defense. ISU is among the top teams in the Big 12, defensively. Iowa State is averaging 15.08 digs per game (third in the Big 12) and 3.06 blocks per game (third-best in the conference). This is an advantage for ISU against OU, who only averages 12.34 digs per game and 2.86 blocks per game.
Headlining the Cyclone defense is junior libero Kate Churm who owns a Big 12-best 4.39 digs per game. In the Cyclones' loss to Texas last week, Churm collected a team-leading 10 digs in the match.
It will be a great battle between liberos as Oklahoma's Anna Monsen is averaging 4.57 digs per game in the past six matches since taking over the libero duties from defensive specialist Hannah Sharp.
At the net, Erin Boeve and Jessica Klein lead the Cyclone effort, tallying 1.66 and 1.20 blocks per game, respectively.
Offensively, the Sooners and Cyclones match up evenly in every category. ISU is pounding 14.40 kills per game while the Sooners own a 14.09 per game mark. Additionally, ISU hits at a .196 clip (ninth in the Big 12) while the Sooners follow with a .180 mark.
The leaders of the ISU offense are junior outside hitter Katie Jessen, who is averaging 3.25 kills per game, while Boeve follows with 3.08 kills per game. In the earlier meeting this season, both were successful against the Sooners. Jessen pounded a team-high 18 kills while Boeve contributed 10 kills in the ISU win.
