Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Tennis Championships

TULSA, Okla. Two Oklahoma men's tennis players competed in the first round of the singles qualifying event at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa on Monday. Senior Alexei Ivanov was eliminated, while fellow senior Tommy Garrison picked up a win and will move on to the second round of 64 players.
Ivanov, who came into the event as the No. 26 seed, faced Mississippi State's Ivan Bjelica. Ivanov battled in the first set but dropped a 7-6(5) tie-breaker and followed with a 6-3 loss in the second set.
Garrison fell 6-3 in his first set against Terence Nugent of Auburn but bounced back, 7-6(3), in the second set. In the third and final set, he netted a 6-3 victory to win the match and secure a spot in the second round. Garrison will face Wichita State's Goran Vujaklija tomorrow.
The duo of Garrison and senior Matt Long will begin competition tomorrow in the first round of the doubles qualifying event. Ivanov and sophomore Federico Chavarria earned a first-round bye and will not compete until later in the day.
Junior Marek Velicka, the lone Sooner to earn a spot in the main singles draw, will see action on Thursday.
