TULSA, Okla. Oklahoma men's tennis senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka took home regional honors after winning the doubles championship match against Tulsa's Ricardo Soriano and Lucques Maasdorp at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa on Monday.
The Sooner duo broke Tulsa's serve in the first game, but the two tandems battled for the remainder of the match. Despite the close competition, the Sooners emerged with an 8-6 victory.
“It was crucial for us that we broke that serve,” said Ivanov. “It was really close until the end. I'm really happy that we won, and I think we deserve the title because we played very well.”
En route to the title, Ivanov and Velicka, who had never paired up before this tournament, tallied a 5-0 record against two teams from Arkansas and three from Tulsa.
“I'm very proud of Marek and Alexei for their accomplishments in winning this prestigious tournament,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “Not only did they prove they're the best in the region, but they also showed that they're one of the best doubles teams in the nation.”
With the win, the duo automatically qualifies for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University Nov. 3-6. The tournament will feature the top 16 teams from across the country, including the winners of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
