AMES, Iowa -- The OU soccer team (12-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 Big 12) continued its recent struggles on the road on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Iowa State (10-5-3 overall, 5-3-1 Big 12) in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners are 3-4-1 when playing away from John Crain Field this season.
In ten all-time meetings, the Cyclones are 7-1-2 against the Sooners.
Iowa State struck first in the 13th minute on a Leslie Hansell goal and the game would remain scoreless for the rest of the first half. Down one goal at the half and leading 11-10 in the shot count, OU remained in the game until ISU padded its lead 20 minutes into the second half. The Cyclones scored two goals within a three-minute span (65:45 and 68:31) and cruised to the 3-0 victory to earn three points in the Big 12 standings.

"Today was a key example of another missed opportunity when we held momentum early in the game," said OU head coach Randy Evans. "Despite the early goal by Iowa State, we created a lot of opportunities to end the first half and could have held a halftime lead but we were unable to connect. Then we gave up two uncharacteristic goals later in the game. This is the second consecutive game that we have been on the road and played well enough to win, but came up on the short end of the stick."
OU trailed 21-14 in the overall shot count but led 3-1 in corner kicks, and failed to score for just the third time this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols made 12 saves in the defeat. Her counterpart, Joanna Haig, collected five saves.
Offensively, junior midfielder Kady Kelly led all Sooners with four shots, followed by junior Savannah Scott with three fires.
The Sooners, after an 11-1-1 start to the season, have dropped four of their last five games. Despite Sunday's loss and a two-game losing streak, the Sooners remain in contention for a spot in the Big 12 Championship (top eight teams qualify).
OU will look to clinch an appearance in the conference tournament against Oklahoma State (10-5-3 overall, 3-5-1 Big 12) in the season finale on Friday, Oct. 28. The Bedlam Series, brought to you by the Bank of Oklahoman and Your Oklahoma Ford Dealers, will be played in Stillwater, Okla., at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
An OU win or tie against Oklahoma State would place the Sooners in the conference tournament for the fourth time in the program's ten-year history. Randy Evans and company can also enjoy a postseason berth with a loss to OSU, if Missouri loses its season finale against Kansas.
