NORMAN, Okla. Eight members of the Oklahoma men's tennis team will travel to Tulsa Oct. 20-24 to compete in the Wilson/ITA Men's Central Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The tournament will feature the top players from Division I central region schools, including Big 12 opponents Colorado, Nebraska and Oklahoma State.
Six players, including seniors Tommy Garrison, Lee Gregg and Alexei Ivanov, junior Marek Velicka, sophomore Ryan Thomas and freshman Cale Planck, will compete in the singles event. Ivanov and Velicka will team up for doubles competition, along with the duos of Garrison and senior Matt Long and Thomas and sophomore Federico Chavarria.
In last year's tournament, Velicka defeated four seeded players to become the singles champion. It marked the first time in 13 years that a player from Oklahoma won the title.
“Our players are really excited to be able to compete against the best individuals in the ITA central region,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “We had excellent results last year with Marek winning the singles championships, as well as advancing three doubles teams to the quarterfinals. We're looking forward to duplicating and hopefully surpassing last year's results.”
The singles finalists and doubles champions from this event will advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University, from Nov. 3-6.
