Sooners to 'Give 'em' Five in New Mexico

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team will participate in Price's "Give em Five" Intercollegiate beginning Monday, Oct. 17 in Las Cruces, N.M. The tournament is hosted by New Mexico State University and will be played on the 6,319-yard, par-72 New Mexico State University Golf Course.

Amparo Gala, the only senior on the team, will be joining the lineup after missing the first two tournaments due to medical reasons. Other Sooners in the lineup include sophomore Kelly Jacques, who has finished in the top 10 at both preceding fall tournaments, junior Jaclyn Stelzer, sophomore Heather Wright and true freshman Kendall Dye.

"We are so excited to have Amparo back, she has made such great progress physically and mentally," said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. "We are looking forward to her leading us at the end of the fall and into the spring."

The 21-team field includes University of New Mexico (ranked No. 15), Baylor (21), Denver (29), Long Beach State (30), Missouri (41), New Mexico State University (46), Arizona, Arkansas-Little Rock, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma, Portland State, San Francisco, Texas Tech, UC-Davis and UTEP.

The tournament is in a 54-hole format. The first 36 holes will be played Monday and the remaining 18 on Tuesday.

"We usually play this course very well," said Ludvigson. "We have been so close in previous weeks. We are really looking to break through on our team score this tournament."

Amparo Gala: Participating in her first tournament of the season ... Only senior on the squad ... Earned a career-best second-place finish at the 2004 Jeannine McHaney Invitational ... Named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a junior ... February 2004 Big 12 Golfer of the Month ... Finished in the top five in two tournaments as a freshman.

Kelly Jacques: Finished in the top 10 in the first two tournaments of the season, including a career-best third-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational and seventh place at the Badger Invitational ... Posted OU's second-lowest individual average (78.79) as a freshman last year... Shot a career-low round of 71 and tied for 14th at the 2004 Kent Youel Invitational.

Jaclyn Stelzer: Shot a 227 and finished a career-best 14th at the 2005 Badger Invitational ... Posted a 237 to tie for 48th at the Mary Fossum Invitational ... Carded a 235 and tied for 26th at the 2005 Big 12 Championship ... An Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree last year.

Kendall Dye: True freshman competing in her third collegiate tournament ... Shot a 228 to tie for 21st at the Mary Fossum Invitational ... With a final score of 237, finished tied for 44th at the Badger Invitational ... Earned five career wins, 27 top-five finishes and 34 top-10 finishes in high school.

Heather Wright: Opened season with a 239 in the Badger Invitational (T49th place) ... Shot another 239 at the Mary Fossum Invitational to tie for 56th ... Earned a career-best fourth-place finish with a career-low 71 at the BU-Tapatio Springs Shootout last season.
