NORMAN, Okla. Despite finishing the first day in first place on the high bar at the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships Men's Team Selection Competition, University of Oklahoma sophomore gymnast was not named to the U.S. team that will compete at the 2005 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
In the second day of competition on Sunday, Oct. 16, Horton posted scores of 9.425 and 9.6 on the vault, 9.25 on the floor exercise and 8.4 on the high bar.
“While it was disappointing that Jonathan did not make the World Championship team, this team selection camp was a tremendous learning opportunity for him,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “He came up just short of securing a spot on the team.”
Horton, a U.S. Senior National Team member, started Sunday's competition as the leader on the high bar after posting a mark of 9.6 on the apparatus in Friday night's competition. The promising sophomore was also third on the vault and sixth on the floor exercise after the first day of competition.
The field for the event included 19 of the United States' best male gymnasts competing for the six-man team that will represent the U.S. at November's competition. The team will consist of Jason Gatson, Sean Golden, Justin Spring, Kevin Tan, Todd Thornton and Yewki Tomita. David Sender was named the team's alternate.
