Soccer Shuts Out Baylor on Senior Day

NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU soccer team (12-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 Big 12) snapped a two-game losing streak on Sunday with a 1-0 shutout victory over Baylor (3-11-1, 1-6-0) at John Crain Field. OU finished the home portion of the 2005 schedule with a school-best 9-1 mark.

Sophomore Shana All scored her first collegiate goal after she connected with Kady Kelly (5) on a cross from the right side at the 53:07 mark. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols recorded her school-record seventh shutout of the season with four saves in the game.

The 12th win of the season also marked a school record for wins in a season (surpassing the 11 recorded in 2001 and 2002) and it was an extra-special win for the nine OU seniors (Lauren MacIver, Becky Nelson, Christy Kenkel, Jenny Jones, Katherine Hergenrether, Michelle Enos, Kristin Vesely, Hollee Fink and Lindsey Pulat) who were honored after the game.

“I am as proud today as I have been of any performance we have had at home,” said OU head coach Randy Evans. “We had a disappointing loss on Friday against No. 19 Texas A&M because we knew we could have played better. But the team battled back today and played hard to pull out the win.

“Our offense created numerous scoring chances and we were unlucky, but our defense stepped up and was solid again. We really needed these points today in the conference standings and now we have put ourselves back into the championship hunt.”

After a slow start, OU took control of the game and led 7-5 in shots at the half. The Sooners finally got on the board after eight minutes and seven seconds ticked off the clock in the second session. Kelly dribbled down the right side of the field and then placed the ball across the box and to All's feet, who beat BU goalkeeper Ashley Holder for the game's lone goal. Holder made nine saves in the game.

OU had several other chances in the second half to put the game completely out of reach, but the one goal was enough for the OU defense to record the shutout. OU has outscored the opposition, 24-9, when playing at home this season.

The Sooners' offense produced numerous scoring chances in the final 13 minutes of the game, including; a MacIver blast from 20 yards out that just cleared the cross bar, two one-on-one chances for junior Savannah Scott, sophomore Tenesha Duncan's shot that hit the right post, and Enos, who put a shot on goal that deflected off the cross bar.

The Sooners finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in shots while the Bears matched OU with three corner kicks.

OU's 2005 season will conclude on the road with three contests in the final two weeks of the season. The road trip starts on Friday, Oct. 21 at Nebraska. The game is slated to start at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally by CSTV available on DirecTV (channel 610) and DISH Network (Channel 152). OU will then travel to Ames, Iowa to battle Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.

The annual Bedlam Series, presented by the Bank of Oklahoma and Your Oklahoma Ford Dealers, will conclude the regular season on Friday, Oct. 28 in Stillwater, Okla., at 6 p.m.
