Iowa State Defeats Sooner Wrestling, 30-6

AMES, Iowa The University of Oklahoma wrestling team fell to Iowa State, 30-6, Sunday at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones handed OU its second Big 12 loss of the season allowing only Sam Hazewinkel (125) and Joel Flaggert (197) to put points on the board for the Sooners.
The dual started at heavyweight with No. 12 Jake Hager taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second period, but falling behind 4-2 in the third. Hager fought to the finish, scoring an escape with one second left on the clock, but lost by decision. 5-3.
Top-ranked Hazewinkel (27-0) kept his 27 match-winning streak alive and defeated No.8 Grant Nakamura by decision, 7-4. Hazewinkel controlled the match only allowing one takedown and led 7-1 at the end of the second period.
At 141 pounds, Teyon Ware suffered his first defeat of the season. No. 2 Ware lost to top-ranked Nate Gallick by a 6-3 decision, which snapped his 24 match-winning streak. The match was all too familiar to Ware, whose 35 match-winning streak was snapped by Gallick last season by a 3-2 decision.
Putting the last points on the board for the Sooners was No. 11 Flaggert who defeated 12th-ranked Trevor Smith by decision, 5-3. Flaggert controlled the match, allowed no takedowns and led 5-2 at the end of the second period.
The Sooners (12-4) will return home to host a double-header against Oregon State and Oregon at the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Norman, Okla.
