Women's Tennis Sweeps OBU and ECU

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team opened up its 2005 indoor spring season with four straight victories Friday including three over Oklahoma Baptist and one over East Central University. The Sooners swept past OBU 6-0, 6-0,7-0, in three consecutive matches and a 7-0 victory against East Central at Woodlake Racquet Club in Oklahoma City.

The Sooner women were decisive in their first match against OBU and didn't drop a single game in the dual, winning all six matches in straight sets. Leading the Sooners at No.1 singles was senior Heather Saluri beating OBU's Kerri McNutt 6-0, 6-0. Also competing for the Sooners and winning in straight sets were senior Jessica Braver, senior Bethany Griffin, freshman Christy Greenly, junior Joi-lee Beachler and sophomore Amanda Pratzel.

In the second match against OBU, the Sooners dominated again. Sophomore Irina Lykina played at No.1 singles and swept OBU's Kerri McNutt, 6-1, 6-0. Griffin, Pratzel and Greenly didn't drop a single game while sophomore Anne Carter saw the first spring victory of her career with a sweep of OBU's Haley Howard, 6-0, 6-0.

At doubles action in the third match against OBU, the Sooners handily defeated OBU's pairs. Playing at No. 1 doubles were freshman Christi Baxley and Pratzel who dominated OBU's McNutt and Lauren White, 8-0. Also not dropping a game at No. 2 doubles was duo Beachler and Carter. Sophomore Mandi Collier and freshman Melissa Mercer defeated OBU's Kim Daniel and Howard, 8-3.

Also in the third match against OBU, the Sooners swept OBU at all six positions. Once again, Saluri led the way at No. 1singles winning, 6-0, 6-0, against White. Seeing her first action this spring was freshman Chelsea Orr who handily defeated OBU's Howard, 6-0, 6-2.

In the final match of the day against East Central, the Sooners swept ECU in doubles and singles. OU finished strong in singles sweeping all six matches again. Starting at No. 1 singles for the Sooners was Lykina who dominated the first set, 6-1, and fought through the second set to win the match 6-4 over ECU's Dasha Segenchuk. The Sooners picked up five additional victories over ECU including sweeps by Braver and Greenly.

Starting off for the Sooners at No.1 doubles was Griffin and Orr winning 8-2 against ECU's Dasha Segenchuk and Staci Kitch. Not losing a single game in doubles action were duo Saluri and Braver at No. 2 doubles and Lykina and Greenly at No. 3 doubles.

After a strong performance Friday, the Sooners will head to Utah for a dual against Utah State in Logan, Utah Feb. 10 and another dual slated for Brigham Young Feb.12 in Provo, Utah.
