Sooners Move on in Qualifying Action

Mens Tennis Defeats Northwestern, 5-2

NORMAN, Okla.   The No. 66 University of Oklahoma men's tennis team started their season Friday with a 5-2 win over No. 40 Northwestern at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill. The Sooners began strong by taking four of six singles matches and two doubles.

The Sooners gained the lead early in the doubles taking two of three matches to gain the doubles point. The duo of Tommy Garrison and Ondrej Fukala earned a hard fought win at the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 victory over Chuck Perrin and Justin Hoeveler. At No.2, Marek Velicka and Silviu Tanasoiu defeated Tommy Hanus and Adam Schaechterle, 8-6.

In singles, four Sooners dominated their opponents. Senior Ondrej Fukala defeated Chuck Perrin, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(4), while senior Silviu Tanasoiu crushed Adam Schaechterle, 6-2, 6-4.  Juniors Alexai Ivanov and Lee Gregg won their respective matches to clinch the win for the Sooners.

The Sooners face DePaul Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill., at 11 a.m.

The first home match for the sooners is March 5 against Navy at 12 p.m.
