Oklahoma Sooners Defeat Cal Poly, 26-6

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. The Oklahoma wrestling team, ranked tenth, defeated Cal Poly, 26-6, in San Luis Obispo, Saturday. Scoring big for the Sooners were undefeated Sam Hazewinkel (19-0) and Teyon Ware (17-0), as well as Justin Dyer who upset his third consecutive ranked opponent.

“We are very pleased with our performance,” said Sooners head coach Jake Spates. “We came out and wrestled hard.”

Last season, Hazewinkel lost for the first time in his college career to Vic Moreno of Cal Poly by a 5-3 decision. This season, No. 1 Hazewinkel avenged the lost from last year and defeated No. 5 Moreno by decision, 5-3. This marks Hazewinkel longest winning streak of his college career.

“Sam Hazewinkel won a very hard match against the fifth ranked guy in the country that defeated him last year, said Spates.”

At 184 pounds, No. 16 Dyer fought hard to upset No.11 Ryan Halsey by a 7-2 decision. In the last week of competition Dyer also upset eighth-ranked C.B. Dollaway of Arizona State by decision 9-3, and Purdue's No. 11 Ben Wissel by a 10-8 decision.

“Justin Dyer also came out and wrestled a tough match against a ranked opponent,” said Spates. “He fought hard, he battled and came out a winner.”

Scoring major decisions for the Sooners were freshman Jerome Featherstone (157) and E.K. Waldhaus (174).

“Overall it was a strong win and I am very pleased with our performance.”

Later today the Oklahoma wrestling team will take on Fresno State in Fresno, Calif., at 5 p.m. pacific standard.
