Womens Gymnastics Releases 2005 Schedule

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma women's gymnastics head coach Steve Nunno announced the 2005 schedule today, a challenging collection that has the Sooners hosting this year's Big 12 Championship on March 26.
Other highlights of the 2005 slate have OU hosting women's perennial power Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 13 and on March 11, the Sooners will host another Southeastern Conference opponent, Louisiana State.
“We are looking forward to our most challenging home schedule yet,” said Nunno. “It will be capped off by the opportunity to defend our BIG 12 title in front of our home fans. In addition, we are excited to host two of the very best teams in the SEC, Georgia and LSU. Our young but experienced team is excited about the upcoming season.”
The Sooners will open the season by participating in the Second Annual Cancun Gymnastics Classic with Brigham Young, George Washington and Gustavus Adolphus College (Division III) on Jan. 7 in Cancun, Mexico at the Hilton Golf and Beach Resort. The following weekend sends OU down to Denton, Texas, to take on Texas Women's University on Jan. 21. The Sooners will host their first meet in Norman on Jan. 21 against Kent State.
OU will host Georgia as part of a duel meet with the OU men's gymnastics team (vs. Nebraska) on Feb. 13 at 4 p.m., at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. The only other duel meet will be held in the Lloyd Noble Center on March 5, when Texas Women's University and Centenary College come to Norman. The men will host Ohio State that same day.
The Sooners will also host one conference meet against Missouri on Feb. 20 and will play host to LSU in Tulsa, Okla. on March 11 inside John Q. Hammons Arena at Union High School. The postseason begins with the Big 12 Championships on March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Lloyd Noble Center. The last time OU hosted the Big 12 Championships was during the 2001 season, when it finished third. The Sooners won their first ever Big 12 Championship last season and had five prior conference championships (Big 8) before last year's run.
The Sooners also made the program's fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships last season with an 11th place finish. The 2005 NCAA Championships will be hosted by Auburn in Auburn, Ala., and will run from April 21-23.
