Tempe, Ariz. The University of Oklahoma soccer team (3-1-3) played in its fourth overtime match of the season and came away with its third tie, a scoreless contest against San Diego State (2-3-2) in the Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday night.
“Once again we played a good game but came away with a frustrating result,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “A common theme seems to be developing this season. We keep creating more scoring opportunities than the opposition but just can not finish on those chances.”
After a tight first half, the Sooners and Aztecs held each other scoreless in the second 45-minute session to force extra time. OU led in the shots column, 14-12, after 90 minutes of action.
In the winding minutes of the second overtime, junior captain Lauren MacIver ripped the ball off the post in what appeared to be one of the Sooners' better scoring opportunities of the evening and the only shot OU recorded in overtime. Unfortunately, none of the Sooners' 15 shots in the game found the back of the net. OU led SDSU in shots on goal (5-4) and the teams were tied in the corner kick category with three each.
“Despite a shaky first half, our defense played great limiting SDSU to nearly zero scoring chances,” said Evans. “The second half was a good half for our offense. I think we ended up hitting the crossbar on three different shots tonight but we are still searching for that one player to depend on to score.”
Senior captain Catherine Wade started her seventh game of the season in goal for OU and recorded two saves before freshman Jennifer Nichols relieved her at halftime. In 65 minutes of action, Nichols recorded two saves in goal. The game moved the freshman's record to 1-1-3 on the year.
MacIver led all players in the game with five shots while OU sophomore Savannah Scott and freshman Tenesha Duncan contributed two shots of their own.
The Sooners are now 0-1-3 when they head to extra time this season. Dating back to last season, the Sooners have now played 10 of their last 17 games in extra sessions.
“I am happy with the way the girls held up in a long game with hot conditions (103 degrees) down on the field,” said Evans. “On Sunday, we just have to keep plugging away and hope the ball goes in the goal against a good Arizona State team.”
OU will conclude play in the Sun Devil Invitational on Sunday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium against host and No. 9 (Soccer Buzz) Arizona State at 3 p.m. (CST). The Sun Devils played host to Dartmouth on Friday night in a late contest after the OU game.
